NASDEA Urges Congress to Expand Counter-Drone Authority

August 20th, 2025

The National Alliance of State Drug Enforcement Agencies (NASDEA) joins leading public safety organizations in calling on Congress to pass comprehensive legislation addressing the criminal misuse of drones.  Drones are increasingly used to smuggle contraband into prisons, disrupt emergency response efforts, and surveil law enforcement operations. Yet, state and local agencies lack the legal authority to respond effectively.  NASDEA supports a permanent, nationwide framework that allows trained public safety personnel to detect, track, and safely mitigate unlawful drone activity. Limited pilot programs are not enough to meet the growing threat.  With major events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup, America 250, and 2028 Olympic Games approaching, the need for coordinated, multi-jurisdictional drone defense is urgent.

We commend Congress for funding detection systems, but without mitigation authority, those tools fall short. NASDEA urges lawmakers to empower agencies in all 50 states—not just a few test sites—with the tools, training, and oversight needed to protect our communities.

State and local agencies are ready to act responsibly and uphold constitutional rights. It’s time to close the gap and strengthen public safety nationwide.
